Yamaha Guitalele... with transducer pickup

Yamaha Guitalele… with transducer pickup,
originally uploaded by tawalker.

I can’t remember the last time a musical instrument “captured” me quite as much as the Yamaha GL-1 Guitalele (well, unless you count the iPod Touch with Garageband, and even that comes second), but I couldn’t help thinking it was missing a couple of things for my taste: an internal transducer pickup and an extra strap button… now my GL-1 has both. Yamaha: how about a “GL-1x” – an electro model, perhaps with a cutaway?

Still, I’m happy with mine :-)

(Note: this got posted to E7P rather than my “personal/musical” site, but I’m keeping it here as it’s probably in your feed-readers, subscriptions, etc. by now… ;-) )

  1. Yes. I agree. Actually, I´ve read somewhere that they did make a few (pluggable) ones some time ago. Mine has the strap buttons, but no pickup yet. How did you do it? I´d love some info on the pickup and preamp you used. Thanks in advance. Peace.

  2. Thanks Jorge :-) Actually, there was no great secret here – the pickup is a “standard” cheap transducer “bug”, and my local music store was able to install it for me. I couldn’t have done it myself ;-)

  3. Well… I did it! Finally I made the decision and did it myself. I went to my local guitar shop and they said they wouldn´t do it and didn´t know anyone that did; treating me like I´d just killed the King (I am from and live in Spain you see; drilling holes into guitars and similar instruments is little less than heresy). So I bought a B-Band U1.5T Ukulele Pickup Set on the net and did it myself. Watched a few vids on YT and it was all over in about 40 minutes. there´s really nothing to it. Now I can plug my guitalle and she even has an onboard tuner (BIG grin mode ON). I´ll put up some vids on YT with it soon. Just search for joguipo. Peace :)
